Course Description

This four hour course introduces concepts in the use of commercially available wearable technology by healthcare providers to improve the health and wellness of their clients.  Modules one and two cover the theory, science and practical application of wearable technology for sleep and exercise form the majority of the course content.  Module three introduces other uses of wearables, including a scoping review of future directions in the field.

Evaluation

The learner’s time spent studying and participating in the course is tracked electronically.  A formal multiple-choice examination is administered at the termination of the course materials.  There will be at least three questions for every hour of the class.  The learner must receive a score of 80% of the total possible points and log at least four hours to receive credit for the course.  Learners not achieving the pass rate will be directed to additional study by the instructor and allowed to re-take the examination.

1) Introduction to wearable technology and the Free Energy Principle.  Introduction to sleep physiology.

2) Evaluation of sleep with wearable technology

3) Exercise as a vital sign

4) Future directions in the use of wearable technology in healthcare

Objectives

1) Become familiar with the Free Energy Principle

2) Define the sleep stages

3) Understand the strengths and limitations in current sleep technology

4) Describe methods of assessing physical activity levels in patients

5) Identify appropriate exercise guidelines for specific diagnoses

6) Analyze cardiorespiratory fitness data in relation to all cause mortality risk
