Course Description

This course is a 36-hour postgraduate program in Minor Surgery/Proctology approved by the Oregon Board of Chiropractic Examiners (OBCE) as meeting their requirements. The Certificate of Completion earned will need to be submitted to the OBCE.

This is a survey program designed to provide learners with an overview of minor surgery and clinical proctology and prepare them for the written examination conducted by the OBCE.

Minor Surgery Lab

This is a hands-on practical experience to simulate procedures shown in the video and described in the manual.

Declaration of Compliance

You must submit the Declaration of Compliance form after completing the Lab section.

Final Quiz

Questions on the written examination are derived from the Minor Surgery/Proctology manual and the lab session. You must pass the exam with a score of 75% or better, if you do not there will be a $75 fee to retake the exam.

Outline

There are four essential components to this course, all of which must be completed in order to successfully pass:

  1. Manual and Lab: The Manual is presented in PDF form. The Lab is presented via streaming video viewed via your web browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari). The learner will be responsible for knowing information contained in both the Manual and the Lab.
  2. Declaration of Compliance: This form must be filled out and submitted after completing the Lab section.
  3. Quiz/Exam: The exam assessing student knowledge will be based on both the videos and notes. This assessment will help reinforce the understanding and application of the key components of the lectures and notes. Passing  the quiz with a score of 75% is required for credit and obtaining the Certificate of Completion.
  4. Time: Expect to spend approximately 24 hours reading the manual and watching the videos and approximately 12 hours completing the lab.

After completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Describe sterile techniques, antiseptics, and wound cleansing solutions
  2. Discuss anesthesia applications and toxic effects
  3. Define skin anatomy and wound healing
  4. Explain wound closure, dressings, and postoperative care
  5. Identify differential diagnosis and treatment of skin tumors
  6. Describe common office/outpatient procedures
  7. Discuss clinical proctology differential diagnosis and management protocol
  8. Practice real minor surgery procedures
