Course Description

This twelve-hour distance based course will provide Doctors of Chiropractic with current information concerning the evaluation and management of several different types of peripheral neuropathies using chiropractic care. The course is designed for the general practicing Doctor of Chiropractic.  The learner’s participation (time) is actively tracked and logged.  The doctors are engaged in this distance-based class by the use of interactive teaching tools including case study interpretation.

Evaluation

The learner’s time spent studying course materials is tracked electronically.  A formal multiple-choice examination is administered at the termination of the course materials.  There will be at least three questions for every hour of the class.  The learner must score 75% to receive credit for the course.  Learners not achieving the pass rate will be directed to additional study by the instructor and allowed to re-take the examination.

Outline

Hour

  1. Review of the physiology and anatomy of peripheral nerves.
  2. Investigate the pathophysiology of peripheral nerve injury and disease.
  3. Understanding the mechanisms and processes that peripheral nerves use to regenerate.
  4. Investigate common systemic conditions that present with symptoms associated with peripheral patterns of neuropathy.
  5. Systemic peripheral neuropathies are further discussed in general terms regarding their etiology and pathomechanics.
  6. Specific peripheral polyneuropathies are investigated including; Whippel’s disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Gillian Barré Syndrome (GBS)
  7. Specific peripheral polyneuropathies are investigated including; Whippel’s disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Gillian Barré Syndrome (GBS) - continued
  8. Upper extremity peripheral neuropathies are investigated in regards to presentation and examination.
  9. Upper extremity neuropathies are discussed. Disorders  include; brachial plexus injury, carpal tunnel syndrome, and pronator syndrome.
  10. Specific mononeuropathies of the ulnar, and radial nerves are investigated.
  11. Lower extremity peripheral neuropathies are investigated in regards to presentation and examination.
  12. Lower extremity peripheral neuropathies are reviewed including; meralgia paresthetica, tarsal tunnel syndrome, peroneal nerve neuropathies.

Objectives

In this course the learner will:

  1. Review the pathophysiology of peripheral nerve pathologies.
  2. Understand how peripheral nerves heal.
  3. Identify systemic peripheral neuropathies and learn what we can do to help these patients.
  4. Analyze commonly encountered upper and lower extremity peripheral neuropathies.
  5. Review the art of history taking as it specifically relates to peripheral neuropathies.
  6. Know the standard of care concerning the physical examination of the patient with a peripheral neuropathy.
  7. Develop further appreciation of systemic the conditions encountered in the general population that involve peripheral neuropathies.
  8. Analyze the history and physical examination to determine a chiropractic care plan.
  9. Evaluate three case studies of individuals with peripheral neuropathies and perform synthesis of the case studies to determine clearance to adjust.
  10. Review and learn about commonly encountered upper and lower extremity peripheral neuropathies.
