Course Description

This four (4) hour course on Lower Extremities Rehab provides the chiropractic practitioner with a systematic, evidence-based roadmap to confidently evaluate, manage, and rehabilitate the most common non-surgical sports injuries and musculoskeletal conditions affecting the hip, knee, ankle, and foot. Developed by longtime sports chiropractor Dr. Nick Campos, this distance-learning course bridges the gap between functional kinetic chain science and practical, in-office clinical management protocols.

Participants will review regional anatomy, biomechanical movement patterns, and definitive differential diagnostic testing to distinguish complex lower extremity presentations from overlapping spinal pathologies. The curriculum outlines clear parameters for identifying red flags that require multidisciplinary referral, while highlighting the distinct conservative management advantages that chiropractors possess as primary care providers.

Through clear, step-by-step instruction, this course equips the doctor with specific manual therapy tools, including myofascial release, active release, and post-isometric relaxation (PIR) techniques. Doctors will master the clinical application of targeted soft-tissue interventions, myofascial release, and post-isometric relaxation protocols alongside progressive functional rehabilitation strategies designed to resolve muscular imbalances, enhance proprioception, and completely stabilize the kinetic chain. Special emphasis is placed on functional gait analysis and the clinical integration of custom orthotic therapy to address foundational overpronation and over supination, ensuring long-term resolution and prevention of recurrent athletic injuries.

Evaluation

The learner’s time spent studying and participating in the course is tracked electronically.  A formal multiple-choice examination is administered at the termination of the course materials.  There will be at least three questions for every hour of the class.  The learner must receive a score of 75% of the total possible points and log at least four hours to receive credit for the course.  Learners not achieving the pass rate will be directed to additional study by the instructor and allowed to re-take the examination.

Objectives

To present the licensee with a foundation with which to approach the most common presentations of sports injuries in modern chiropractic offices. The licensee will review history-taking and examination techniques to confirm or rule out common factors in sports injuries and will learn tips to help doctors with differential diagnosis. The licensee will learn various rehabilitation techniques to correct underlying biomechanical dysfunctions and muscular imbalances.

Upon completion of this course, the attending doctor will be able to:

  • Identify and differentiate the primary mechanisms of injury behind common lower extremity sports conditions, including iliopsoas syndrome, piriformis syndrome, iliotibial band friction syndrome, cruciate/collateral ligament injuries, meniscal tears, patellar tendonitis, ankle sprains, and Achilles tendinopathies.
  • Execute a targeted lower extremity orthopedic examination utilizing comprehensive orthopedic tests to locate soft-tissue lesions and mechanical joint instability accurately.
  • Differentiate between localized extremity pathologies and referred symptoms from lumbar spine disc herniations or space-occupying radiculopathies.
  • Apply specific in-office manual techniques, like myofascial release, post-isometric relaxation (PIR), and functional rehabilitation. Precise extremity adjustments to optimize restricted articular play and reduce hypertonicity are also discussed.
  • Design and progress comprehensive functional rehabilitation programs incorporating core stabilization, progressive resistance exercise, and advanced balance training to recalibrate the central nervous system.
  • Conduct an objective gait evaluation to determine the necessity of custom shoe-insert orthotic devices, managing casting specifications and patient compliance strategies to correct foundational foot dysfunctions.
