Hours: 6

Course Description

This six hour distance-based course (composed of videos to watch) will provide Doctors of Chiropractic with the information concerning chiropractic care and the segmental drop system of adjusting. This course will relate the Leg Check Analysis System to the detection of areas of subluxation in the Cervical and Ilio-Sacral Regions of the body and the relationship of the Inhibitory-Facilitory portions of the brain as it applies to the Leg Analysis System. In addition to the analysis system, specialized adjusting procedures will be covered utilizing the Segmental Drop System of Adjustment of the Spine and related Joint Structures.

The videos in this course were recorded by Dr. Wayne Zemelka -
Dr. Z, who was regarded as the Thompson Technique Specialist, worked with Dr. Thompson for years, beginning in the late Seventies. In early 1980, he convinced Dr. Thompson to make a video series showing the analysis and adjusting techniques. This turned out to be a very good idea, and thus was born a teaching concept that has brought the Thompson Technique to the forefront of Chiropractic adjusting worldwide.

Evaluation

The learner’s time spent studying course materials is tracked electronically. Six hours of actual online time is required.A formal multiple-choice examination is administered at the termination of the course materials. There will be at least three questions for every hour of the class. The learner must score 75% to receive credit for the course.

Outline

The course utilizes lecture, demonstrations on digital slides, and video depicting the actual assessments and adjustments, as a means of imparting the procedures utilized in adjusting patients.
A. Learning how to relate the Reticular Formation and its association with the Inhibitory-Facilitory System and its direct effect on the musculature as it influences the balance of the body. The doctor will learn the correlation of this variance as it relates to the patient through the leg analysis procedure, and to determine what degree of effect this has in determining the proper decision in treatment of the patient.
B. Video Demonstrations are conducted throughout the course to increase the level of awareness of the proper procedures incorporated in performing a proper leg analysis procedure on a patient. Impart to the student/doctor the basis of thinking utilized by Dr. Thompson in adapting Newton’s Second Principle of objects falling through space and the interaction as it applies to the segmental drop adjusting.
C. Present the rationale of drop adjusting and the amount of force as measured in Research studies conducted by the Palmer College Research Department.
D. Demonstrate the proper procedure of performing a leg analysis and adjusting procedures utilizing slides, and video are used throughout the entire course as reinforcement of the learning experience.

Objectives

This course is intended to teach participants how the Derifield-Thompson Leg Analysis System may be utilized in providing care to patients with the addition of leg checks, and to correlate this information with other courses the participant has completed, such as physical exam, x-ray studies, laboratory and orthopedic and neurological examinations.

1. Review the involvement of the Inhibitory-Facilitory System of the brain as the neurological relationship to the contractured leg measuring concept, and how to properly do a Leg Length Analysis on a patient to provide useful information contributing to the data base leading to an analysis.

2. Review the basic operational features of the “Segmental Drop Table” in its application to full spine and extremity adjustment procedures, and to teach the student how to utilize this procedure in adjustment of the human spine and other joints of the body by demonstration on video segments.

3. Present the Five Basic Categories of Analysis of the Derifield-Thompson Leg Check and the adjustment procedures specific to each category. These include Negative Derifield, Positive Derifield, Cervical syndrome, X-Derifield, and Bilateral Cervical Syndrome.

4. Designate those conditions which may present contra indications, utilizing the Leg Analysis System and Adjusting Techniques learned on the Segmental Drop Tables

5. Train the student/doctor to utilize the Decision Tree Process and the application of the Triage Methodology to develop a decision making model that will aid in assembly of the data in determining the care to be rendered to the patient.

6. Present additional Adjustment Procedures that will enhance the application of health care Delivered to the needs of the patient based on the analysis procedures learned in this Chiropractic Model of care.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
a. Identify the results of the Derifield-Thompson Analysis System.
b. Describe and demonstrate proper procedures for adjusting on the segmental drop tables.
c. Describe and correlate the integration of the leg check system with other data derived from the patient examination.
d. Review of the Thompson Technique to aid the Doctor of Chiropractic in defining of the finer points of this Chiropractic adjusting technique.
