Course Description

This 2-hour continuing education course provides Doctors of Chiropractic with practical, evidence-informed training to identify suicide warning signs, utilize brief screening strategies, communicate effectively with at-risk patients, and initiate appropriate referral or emergency response while remaining within chiropractic scope of practice. Emphasis is placed on real-world clinical scenarios, documentation considerations, and reducing provider uncertainty and discomfort when addressing suicide risk in clinical settings.

Evaluation

The content of this course is provided through reading material which the learner’s participation (time) is actively tracked and logged. A minimum of two hours is required. There will be at least three questions for every hour of the class. The learner must receive a score of 80% of the total possible points and log at least two hours to receive credit for the course. Learners not achieving the pass rate will be directed to additional study by the instructor and allowed to re-take the examination.

Outline

Hour 1: Foundations of Suicide Risk Recognition

  • Suicide as a public health issue
  • Relevance to chiropractic and musculoskeletal practice
  • Common risk factors and protective factors
  • Warning signs and red flags identified during history and review of systems
  • Suicide risk considerations in patients with chronic pain, concussion, and neurologic conditions

Hour 2: Screening, Response, and Referral

  • How to ask about suicide directly, clearly, and safely
  • Overview of brief screening tools appropriate for chiropractic practice (e.g., PHQ-9 Item 9)
  • Determining level of risk and urgency
  • Appropriate clinical responses based on risk tier
  • Referral strategies and emergency escalation
  • Documentation essentials and professional boundaries
  • Case examples and applied clinical decision-making

 

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify common suicide risk factors and warning signs relevant to chiropractic patient populations, including individuals with chronic pain, concussion, and neurologic conditions.
  2. Recognize verbal, behavioral, and emotional cues that may suggest suicidal ideation during routine clinical encounters.
  3. Demonstrate appropriate use of brief suicide risk screening strategies suitable for non–mental health providers.
  4. Differentiate between low, moderate, and high suicide risk to determine appropriate clinical next steps.
  5. Respond to identified suicide risk using clear, ethical, and legally defensible actions consistent with chiropractic scope of practice.
  6. Initiate appropriate referral pathways, including coordination with primary care providers, mental health professionals, and emergency services when indicated.
  7. Document suicide risk discussions and clinical decision-making in a manner that supports patient safety and professional accountability.
